Background Information:
Education Code 47605(b) sets forth the process for consideration of a petition for charter school and provides that within 30 days of the governing board’s receipt of a charter petition, the board must hold a public hearing on the provisions of the charter proposal, at which time the governing board of the district shall consider the level of support for the petition by the teachers employed by the district, other employees of the district and parents. The statute further provides that the governing board must make a determination whether to grant or deny the charter petition within 60 days of its receipt of the petition. The Act allows the parties to agree to an extension of the timeline.
Current Considerations:
In accordance with Education Code 47605(b), the Sweetwater Union High School District Governing Board will consider the Petition according to the following schedule:
The Governing Board received the Sweetwater Secondary School Charter Petition at its meeting on October 10, 2016. This action commenced the statutory review period. On November 14, 2016, the board held a public hearing on the provisions of the charter, to consider the level of support for the petition by the district teachers, other employees of the district, and parents. At this current meeting, December 12, 2016, the board will review the (attached) staff report and render a decision to grant or deny the Petition. If denial is recommended, the Governing Board will adopt findings in compliance with Education Code Section 47605(b)(1)-(6), in support of the denial.
